Project Overview
The Comox Valley Hospital (CVH) is a 428,700 sq. ft. acute care facility that opened in 2017 as part of the North Island Hospitals Project. The hospital features 153 patient beds, an adult and adolescent psychiatric unit, emergency care, diagnostic imaging, surgical and endoscopy services, maternity, ambulatory care programs, cardiopulmonary diagnostics, a clinical support building, and a University of British Columbia teaching facility. Both CVH and its sister hospital in Campbell River achieved LEED Gold certification, underscoring Island Health’s commitment to long-term sustainability and energy-efficient design.
Challenge
Hospitals require reliable, long-lasting domestic hot water systems to support critical operations around the clock. Equipment must withstand varying water conditions, deliver consistent performance, and minimize lifecycle costs for owners who plan decades ahead.
Solution
CVH selected PVI EZ Plate water heaters, built from engineered duplex stainless steel. Unlike lined carbon steel tanks, AquaPLEX resists corrosion and chloride stress cracking without the need for glass linings or sacrificial anodes. PVI backs this reliability with a 25-year warranty, aligning with healthcare’s preference for durable, low-maintenance infrastructure.
Results
-
Long-Term Value: Duplex stainless construction extends service life and reduces replacement cycles
-
Operational Reliability: Supports 24/7 hospital demand for critical hot water loads
-
Sustainability Alignment: Durable equipment complements the hospital’s LEED Gold certification and long-term energy and maintenance goals
