Challenges

The new Victoria handyDART Centre in View Royal, B.C., BC Transit’s first LEED Gold transit operations facility, opened in April 2025 to address growing demand for accessible, door‑to‑door transit services in Greater Victoria. Achieving LEED Gold requires not only energy‑efficient HVAC systems, but also seamless integration with building controls, rigorous commissioning, and maintaining occupant comfort, all while supporting low‑carbon operations in a new construction context.

Solutions

As part of our commitment to support sustainable building performance and reducing carbon footprint, in collaboration with Stantec, we supplied eight Tempeff DualCore units and one Annexair unit (100% green cabinet), with capacities ranging from 1,500 to 3,200 CFM and sensible heat recovery efficiencies of 85–95%. We also supplied a Hubbell heat pump water heating system to maximize the energy efficiency of the domestic hot water plant. This level of performance far exceeds standard thresholds, sharply reducing heating energy demands and enhancing indoor comfort. The improved HVAC performance directly supports energy modeling and helps the facility surpass ASHRAE 90.1 baselines, contributing significantly to the Energy & Atmosphere credits required for LEED Gold.

Results

These high-efficiency units played a pivotal role in optimizing energy performance, enhancing sustainability outcomes, and supporting the Victoria handyDART Centre in achieving its LEED Gold certification—setting a new benchmark in low-carbon transit infrastructure.
